“The Red City” of Morocco or, as it is better known, Marrakech, is one of the main cities in Morocco. This nickname comes from the red ochre colour of the outside of its buildings, a natural colour from the soil in the area, which was traditionally used as a building material. In the south of the country and located at the feet of the Atlas Mountains, it is, together with Meknes, Fez and Rabat, one of the four imperial cities of Morocco. Marrakech will surprise you with its exoticness and uniqueness as well as its natural surroundings.

The city

Marrakech is essentially divided into two parts. On one side, you have the centre, with the Medina or old city as its main attraction; surrounded by spectacular red-soil bastions, it is one of the must-see places in Marrakech. On the other side of the walls, the “ville nouvelle” or new city is also worth exploring. It was built by the French during the colonial era.

The square

Everything in Marrakech is centred around Jemaa el-Fnaa Square. This is the central square in the city, and it is a space filled with colour, culture and trade, visited by thousands of people, by both day and night. It is the picture we have in our minds when we think of Morocco.

During the day, storytellers, teachers sharing their wisdom, snake charmers, dancers, dentists, juice sellers, acrobats, letter writers and water sellers all gather there, amongst others. And, when the sun goes down, Marrakech nightlife, which grows every day, offers visitors a wide range of activities in different bars, clubs, discos or theatres.

The gardens

Marrakech is a chaotic city, so if you want to escape the hustle and bustle of the city, we suggest that you visit the many gardens that you can find both within the city and in the surrounding areas. The Majorelle Garden, currently owned by Yves Saint Laurent, with a small Museum of Islamic Art, the famous Menara Gardens at the feet of the Atlas Mountains,  "Le Jardin Secret" where visitors can see the strict geometric rules applied to Islamic gardens are only a few of the most well-known ones. You can also travel a few kilometres outside of the city to enjoy the sensory experience of the Nectarome Gardens or go through a fantastic open-air art gallery designed by André Heller: The Anima Gardens.

Venture to the city's outskirts

If you’re an adventure lover, you can visit the Ourika Valley and take a guided tour through the Atlas Mountains. Activities such as renting buggies or quadbikes, or a camel ride in the outskirts of the city, are a brilliant way to explore the exotic, desert landscape that surrounds the city.

From Marrakech, it is easy to reserve day trips, with transport included, to the magnificent waterfalls of Ouzoud, the highest and most beautiful ones in Morocco. If you prefer to visit the Moroccan coast, we recommend that you spend a day visiting the coastal city of Essaouira. Its Medina has been declared a World Heritage Site, and it is surrounded by fantastic walls that make up part of the locations used in the well-known series Game of Thrones.
